Lager Recipe in the Style of Heineken

The ever popular Heineken is a fairly basic lager in my opinion. I prefer beers with more flavour but have been known to down a few Heinekens when it is available on tap. This recipe is for a lager beer similar in style to Heineken.

Ingredients

1 can Thomas Coopers Heritage Lager

1Kg Light Dry Malt

250gm Dextrose

12gm Hellertau finishing hops

European Lager yeast.

Method

Make sure the finishing hops is steeped for at least 10 minutes. Mix everything up and ferment for 4 to 5 days before bottling.

As this recipe uses European Lager yeast, fermenting temperature needs to be kept low at around 12 to 15 degrees. If you don't have a method to keep the vat cool, try brewing this one in winter.

Should finish up at about 5.2% alcohol.

In the Style of Kilkenny Irish Ale

Kilkenny is the classic Irish bitter. Strong on taste and very smooth.

This recipe does a good job of cloning the taste and style of Kilkenny using simple kit and kilo ingredients. But, what you don't get is the smooth flow bubbliness so you do miss out on that part of the experience.

Ingredients

1 can Morgan's Royal Amber Ale

1Kg Ultra Blend

150g Dextrose (you could add as much as 250g. 150g gives about 4.3% alcohol).

12g Fuggles Hops

English Ale yeast

Method

Mix up ingredients as with any kit and kilo recipe. Make sure you steep the finishing hops well (at least 10 to 15 minutes) as the fuggles hops gives this brew key characteristics.

Fermenting temp: 18 to 22 degrees C.

In the Style of Pilsener Urquell

Czech beers have that lovely hoppy taste from the saaz hops. They can be quite strong on the bitterness while retaining smoothness and ares still refreshing. I've only done this recipe once before posting but will definitely be doing this one again. It is a very good representaiton of the classic Czech beer flavours.

Ingredients

1 can Thomas Coopers Pilsener

1Kg ultra blend

12g saaz finishing hops

European lager yeast

Method

Mix this lot up as with any kit and kilo brew kit. Make sure you give the saaz hops at least 10 minutes steeping, preferably 15 or 20 to ensure nice strong saaz flavours on the pallet.

Because this uses European hops, fermentation temperature is 12 to 15 degrees C. So this one is best brewed in winter if you don't have a method to keep it chilled.
